COSI

The Department of Civil Engineering at The Ohio State University and COSI worked together to create a 14' wave tank that contains approximately 1,000 pounds of water. A sloping, sandy beach cover the bottom fo the tank. A wedge-shaped wave generator controls the celerity, hight, and frequency of the waves. Vistors can use a lever to control the wave generator and reshape the beach, learning about the physics of waves: from formation to impact. It is hoped that better awareness of coastal research will excite and inspire the next generation of scientists and prepare them for the challenges of the future.

Future Engineers' Summer Camp 2005

In the Future Engineer's Summer Camp 2005 or FESC, funded by the National Science Foundation, girls entering the 8th grade explore concepts from science and engineering. In Waves of Destruction, these students were able to explore how to design buildings to prevent damage from strong waves.

Claire Nichols explains the project to the girls.

The students discuss the situation, construct LEGO buildings based on the information that they have learned, and test their structures against the power of water.

Kim Hatton oversees the supplies.
